Which valve problem are you seeing?

One zone will not start

Hunter lists water-supply, voltage, and blocked internal-port problems among the reasons a valve may not open. A dead zone does not automatically mean the controller needs replacement. [1]

Water keeps running

A valve may pass water after the controller stops calling for it. Read our guide to sprinklers that keep running and call for help identifying the cause.

Water collects in the valve box

We inspect the valve body and nearby connections. For water appearing elsewhere in the lawn, start with sprinkler leak detection and repair.

A low sprinkler keeps dripping

Hunter distinguishes temporary drainage from water passing through a leaking zone valve. Those are different problems, and a head check valve cannot fix a leaking zone valve. [2]

Need the water to stop?

Stop the watering cycle. If flow continues and you can safely identify the irrigation shutoff, close the sprinkler water supply. Do not open a pressurized valve or handle flooded electrical equipment. Tell us whether the water continues with the controller off.

How we check a sprinkler valve

  1. Identify the affected zone. We review the symptoms, controller response, and access to the valve box.
  2. Check the valve and wiring. We investigate water supply, valve operation, solenoid, and wiring as appropriate.
  3. Discuss repair options. Cleaning, compatible internal parts, a solenoid, or a complete valve may be appropriate. We explain the work and pricing first.
  4. Test the result. We check that the zone starts, waters, and stops as expected.

Valve repair questions

Does every bad valve need to be replaced?

No. The condition of the body, available parts, and diagnosis determine the options. Hunter notes that debris or diaphragm damage can cause leaking through a valve. [2]

Is the solenoid the same as the valve?

The solenoid is the electrically operated part attached to the valve. Replacing it will not resolve every internal valve or pipe problem. We check the cause before recommending parts.

Could the timer be the problem?

Yes, but wiring and water-supply problems can look similar. We can check the wiring and discuss timer and controller repair. [1]

Why does the lowest head drain after watering?

Water remaining in the zone may drain through its lowest outlet and then stop. If water keeps flowing, have the valve checked. See head repair and replacement for head-related issues. [2]

What affects the price?

Access, valve size, compatible parts, nearby piping, and diagnostic time affect the work. Call for current service charges and see what affects repair cost.

Can you check the system before winter?

Ask about winterization and blowouts. Mention any zone that cannot open or close so we can plan for the problem before seasonal shutdown.
